Oliver Giving

(jyotihnetwork.org, olivergiving.com)

"There are three things in this world that keep me going strong: electronic music, yoga and friendships. I've been DJing for 9 years and have played at a number of events around British Columbia.

A few years ago I helped launch the Jyotih Network, a non-profit electronic music collective that organizes events to raise funds for charities in the downtown eastside of Vancouver.

Using Ableton Live, I mix conscious intelligent beautiful funky inspiring music that helps to create a positive environment on vibrant dancefloors."

Nagdeo

(Rainbow Cathedral: Victoria)

Harkening from the deep, green forests of south VanIsle, Nagdeo Menninkainen brings forth the essence of sacred woodlands. He is inspired by the nourishing traditions which sustain life: food, natural healing, wilderness, community, and creation itself. These traditions find expression within his music, as lush soundscapes, deep ambience, and delicious downtempo beats come forth, like ripe fruit borne upon a tree.

With roots in the westcoast intentional dance community, Nagdeo is known for his grounded, yet uplifting opening sets, as well as gentle, nurturing sonic pillows to close. His subtly textured journeys aim to evoke good dreams for the kinfolk, and help bring a sense of deep interconnectedness to tribal gatherings.

Drum & Bell Tower

Drum and Bell Tower is one man's attempt to reveal the natural joints between that which is elemental in music: rhythm and melody; drum and bells. A one-man computer-based live-drum-pounding knob-tweaking guitar-soaked cross between Caribou, Radiohead, and Underworld.  It is music for spacing out and/or dancing your ass off to.

Ever since Brent Morton heard what Jimmy Page did with his guitar in the sonic twilight zone of Dazed and Confused, he wanted to make music with a focus on sounds.  Emerging from the "Floyd Void" and discovering Radiohead in the 90's, he has spent subsequent years working on sonic manipulation and texturization.

The strength of Drum & Bell Tower is the interplay of genres, the artful mongrelization of elements, and the fact that Morton employs the audio capabilities of midi and computer while alternating between psychedelic guitar, tripped-out vocals, and drums, out of which the living s#!* is pounded.

Transgress

Transgress is the solo Live PA project of Peter 'Fish' Fisera (also of the live improvised techno band Inject, see http://inject.org). Instead of the laptop that is commonly the heart of a Live PA setup these days, Fish uses Alesis MMT-8 hardware MIDI sequencers from circa 1989, along with a large array of both vintage and recent synths and drum machines.

The result: techno, breaks, tech-trance, or downtempo; melodic and trippy, sometimes chaotic but rarely abrasive, and with an emphasis on original synth sounds rather than the expected, and on funky multi-layered tribal rhythms. Since 2002, Transgress has played in many venues and vibes, including the late night parties and smoky clubs where techno music is often found. See http://goatvirus.com/knapsack/music/transgress for more info.

Stephen Reid

Stephen is of the traditional form of DJ’s where vinyl solutions dominate the story. Immersed in the dance scene in BC for years allowed Stephen to grow and develop a true appreciation of the power of expression through movement. Stephen does not cater to a particular genre, but rather spins a song of vibrant rhythms that are told to reflect a story and energy that surrounds us. With a focus on dance, Stephen will spin us into expressions of beauty.

Granville Johnson

"I was born and raised in the mean yet musical streets of Chicago or Chi-town, the Blues City, as we natives of the hood would say, by a musical family of performers.

I am a World Beat musician. I play Djembe (African drum), Tongue Drum and other percussion instruments. I am not a traditional Djembe player. My heritage is African American/Canadian. Being a traveler and a life long artist, my music has become a symbiosis of my cultural roots and global exposure.

Though primarily self-taught, my musical mentors include the master drummmers: Albert St. Albert and Mandido Morris, who have become life-long friends and drum-brothers.

Djembe, the African Healing or Power Drum, and I met 35 years ago. Love at the first stroke of dynamic rhythm, would be an apt description of my music that has grown into its own unique identity.

The rhythm, the music, the song of the power drum, is spontaneous and thus improvisational, though musical themes are common and repeatable. The same song is never played exactly the same way twice.  The intricate polyrhythm builds in intensity and melodic complexity while resonating with that most basic human rhythm, the heartbeat. "
